Brown calf (vol. 1) and marbled calf (vol. 2), ornate ribbed spines, mottled (vol. 1) and red (vol. 2) edges (period bindings). First edition of the first two volumes of Mémoires de l'Académie Royale de chirurgie. The first volume contains 28 Mémoires et Observations by Quesnay, Petit père et fils, du Fouart, de La Peyronie, Puzos, Faget l'aîné, Houstet, Le Dran, Hévin, de La Faye, Simon, Foubert, de Launay, Garengeot and Foubert. The illustration consists of a vignette on the title engraved by Lebas after Boucher, two headpieces after Humblot, two lettrines and 20 folding plates. The frontispiece is missing. The second volume begins with important introductory pieces, including the Histoire de l'Académie Royale de Chirurgie, the Nouveau règlement pour l'Académie du 18 mars 1751, the list of academicians, various eulogies, the list of works published by various academicians from 1731 to 1741, and an article concerning two instruments approved by the Académie. There are 40 memoirs and observations by Verdier, Petit fils, Benomont, Morand, Belloq and others. This second volume is illustrated with a frontispiece designed and engraved by Cochin fils, a title vignette by Boucher, two headpieces after Humblot, two lettrines and 21 of 22 folding plates; plate 6 is missing.
