Foxiang (Zaoxiang): A stele depicting a headless Buddha faci - Lot 72
Foxiang (Zaoxiang): A stele depicting a headless Buddha facing forward; the missing right hand would likely have been raised in the abhaya mudra (fearlessness), and the left hand in the varada mudra (bestowal), as is often the case in Northern Wei steles. The halo, with the hole for attaching the head, is still present. The composition of this stele, as well as the Buddha’s robe, exemplify the most classical style of Northern Wei statuary.
