Édouard CREMIEUX (Marseille, 1856-1944) The painter near the river Oil on canvas. Signed lower right; gallery label on back. 32 x 45.5 cm Biographical note: Crémieux's brushwork and palette are close to those of Jean-Baptiste Olive. A pupil of Guindon in Marseille, and of Bouguereau, Tony Robert-Fleury and Cormon in Paris, where he met Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh, he exhibited sunny seascapes, fishing scenes and landscapes (Le Port de Cassis, La Calanque du Vallon des Auffes) at the Salon from 1884 to 1912. He also sent his paintings to the Salon des Artistes Provençaux, the Salon Rhodanien and the Association des Beaux-Arts de Cannes. The Musée de Toulon owns a remarkable Gare de Saint-Menet in Aubagne. Crémieux died in deportation. G. Schurr P.
