Handwritten letter to Mademoiselle Diane de Cuttoli, 31 Cour - Lot 97
Handwritten letter to Mademoiselle Diane de Cuttoli, 31 Cours Napoléon, Ajaccio, Corsica, circa 1924.
"Paris Tuesday
Here are some singing birds, of a species I haven't eaten since I was a child. They come to my fireside, where I'm chained by the pain of the grim winter, dreaming of sun and sea. My burning head, tortured by neuralgia, rolls an ancient image. I'll eat your birds.
Mademoiselle Diane and dear colleague, thinking of a blissful Corsica, where there is neither this cold, nor these atrocious seasons, where the spirit is always light, where one believes that Paris is delightful to inhabit...
I send you all my thanks. My very weak appetite gets a little excited at the thought of these birds.
All the best.
Paul Valéry
Are you happy with your preface?"
