Sleep guardian" stele - Gurage, Ethiopia Carved wood with grooved surface, beautiful antique patina Culture: Gurage, southwestern Ethiopia Estimated period: XIXᵉ - early XXᵉ century Carved from a dense wood plank, this stele features fine vertical grooving work, a characteristic mark of Gurage works. Planted inside or outside huts, these steles were used to protect inhabitants while they slept, warding off evil spirits.
