Mummiform ouschebti inscribed in hieroglyphic... - Lot 127 - Alpilles Camargue Enchères
Mummiform ouschebti inscribed in hieroglyphic characters painted on four registers in the name of the royal scribe IMENMES, son of PENDJERTY. Intense blue earthenware. Slight "fire stroke" having turned brown. Small chips on the right elbow and the right foot. H. 13.8 cm. From General Veaux who participated in the Egyptian expedition with Bonaparte. Then given by this soldier to Pierre Coste, then by descent. 2/4000 Antoine-Joseph Veaux was born on September 17, 1764 in Seurre, where his father was a notary. In 1785 he enlisted in the infantry regiment of Rouergue; he was discharged in 1791. Back in Seurre, he was hired on August 27, 1791 as a captain in the first battalion of volunteers of the Côte-d'Or which was formed. At his request, he joined the army of the Alps in 1793; he served as adjutant general in charge of the battalion. Then in June 1795 he was employed by the Army of Italy where he was promoted to brigadier general in 1797. He was 33 years old. On January 12, 1798, he was assigned to the Army of the East and left for Egypt where he was seriously wounded at the siege of Saint-Jean d'Acre. The newspapers announced his death. In reality, he embarked for treatment in France and was captured by the English. Finally exchanged, he returned only in February 1800. He said he had not recovered from his wounds and asked to be closer to his family. Thanks to the support of his friend Junot, he was attached to the 18th military division. In 1805 he joined the army of Italy, then the following year the 8th corps of the Grande Armée; he was wounded at Wagram. On September 4, 1809, he was given command of the department of the Côte-d'Or. He took office on September 21 and remained in that position until 1814.
